South African Maths Olympiad

The South African Mathematics Olympiad is organised by the S.A. Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns, in conjunction with the South African Mathematical Society and AMESA.

Over 27 000 learners from 690 schools participated in this year's first round. Schools from Nambia and Swaziland also participate in this Olympiad.

The competition consists of separate papers for juniors (grades 8 and 9) and seniors (grades 10 to 12). The aim of the Olympiad is to develop mathematical talent and a positive image of mathematics amongst the youth, and to develop mathematics teachers in doing so. All learners derive benefits from the competition. The majority of learners' success is measured by the fact that, because of practise done before the competition, they can solve problems, which would have been beyond their ability. By participating all learners become better problem solvers.
